Important: Make sure to create an assignment before setting up the peer review activity.
Peer review is designed as a collaborative learning activity where Learners assess and provide feedback on their peers' assignment submissions. Learn more on activity types here.
Keywords
Review: A single act of evaluation, assessment, or critique that a Learner provides on another Learner’s assignment submission, based on the rubric defined by Instructors in the peer review activity settings.
Feedback: A single instance of evaluation, assessment, or critique that a Learner receives on their own assignment submission, based on the rubric defined by Instructors in the peer review activity settings.
In a peer review, a Learner gives a review and receives feedback.
How to create a Peer Review activity
Create peer review as a separate activity in the program. Navigate to the course → Program → Add new → Peer review:
2. Make sure to create Rubric. You can utilize the default questions provided or craft your own. These questions serve as the standards by which Learners are expected to provide feedback to their peers' assignment submissions.
3. The peer review activity works for a single assignment. Navigate to Settings to connect the assignment which should be peer reviewed:
Important: Make sure to disable the Requires review for the connected assignment. Otherwise, the assignment submissions will be accessible for the Instructor's review.
Peer Review Settings
The settings allow Team to configure how peer review activities function for the selected assignment.
Assignment
The peer review activity is linked to the assignment (e.g. Google Analytics Properties)
A notification indicates that “Requires instructor review” is currently enabled, with a clickable option to turn it off via assignment settings.
Opening Date
This is an optional toggle where instructors can set a specific date for when the activity becomes available to learners.
Number of Reviews
Instructors can define how many peers each learner must review.
A maximum of 100 reviews per learner can be configured.
Anonymity
Option to enable or disable anonymous peer review.
Toggle available to Make submission reviewer and feedback receiver anonymous.
Visibility
Team can choose when the peer review activity is visible to learners.
Delete Peer Review
It allows to permanently remove the peer review setup.
Important: this action cannot be undone.
How matching works in peer review
Key Matching Guideline:
Peer review matching aims to balance the number of submission review requests and received feedback among all Learners, striving to align it as closely as possible with the pre-set Number of reviews defined in the activity settings.
The actual number of received feedback and submission reviews may differ across Learners and from the set Number of reviews due to the following matching arrangement:
a Learner providing the review will be matched with another Learner who meets the following criteria:
a) has the fewest number of feedbacks
b) has completed their own assignment submission earliest among those with an equal number of feedbacks.
a Learner who submits their assignment later than others might not receive any feedback if all other learners have already completed their rounds of peer review.
How to ensure that the number of reviews and feedbacks aligns with the set Number of reviews?
Note: The actual number of completed reviews and received feedbacks may differ from the set Number of reviews. The following guidelines explain how to align the number of reviews and feedback as closely as possible with the set Number of reviews.
To balance the number of reviews and feedbacks among all Learners and bring this number as close as possible to the predetermined Number of reviews, ensure that:
the connected assignment has a set deadline. Learn how to set the deadline here
the peer review for this assignment has Opening date setting enabled
the Opening date for peer review is scheduled for a later date than the assignment deadline.
Example:
The assignment is planned to become accessible to learners on May 1, 2025, at 2:00 pm (Opening date in assignment settings).
The assignment deadline is scheduled for 8 days following the opening date, providing learners with a submission window until 2:00 pm on May 9, 2025.
Recommendation:
Consider incorporating a time gap between the assignment deadline and the opening date of peer review to ensure that Learners with late submissions have the opportunity to receive feedback.
