How to Launch Peer Review
How to Launch Peer Review
Updated over 7 months ago

Important: Make sure to create an assignment before setting up the peer review activity.

Peer review is designed as a collaborative learning activity where Learners assess and provide feedback on their peers' assignment submissions. Learn more on activity types here.

Keywords

Review: the single act of evaluation, assessment and critique a Learner provides to other Learner's assignment submission based on the rubric set by Instructors in the peer review activity settings.

Feedback: the single piece of evaluation, assessment and critique a Learner receives for their assignment submission based on the rubric set by Instructors in the peer review activity settings.

In peer review, a Learner provides review and receives feedback

How to create a peer review activity

  1. Create peer review as a separate activity in the program. Navigate to the course → Program → Add new → Peer review:

2. The peer review activity works for a single assignment. Navigate to Settings to connect the assignment which should be peer reviewed:

Important:

  • peer review is applicable to personal assignments only. Ensure that the assignment you link is not a group assignment.

  • make sure to disable the Requires review for the connected assignment. Otherwise, the assignment submissions will be accessible for the Instructor's review.

3. Customize the peer review activity as per the following criteria:

Content

  • add additional information to guide Learners on how to conduct peer reviews for the connected assignment.

Rubric

  • utilize the default questions provided or craft your own

  • these questions serve as the standards by which Learners are expected to provide feedback to their peers' assignment submissions.

Opening date

  • optional setting. If the opening date is not set, the activity becomes available based on the chosen access type.

  • make sure to set the opening date later than the opening date of the connected assignment

Number of reviews

  • decide how many reviews each Learner can do. You can set 5 max.

  • the default number of review is 3

Note: A Learner may end up with fewer feedbacks than the predetermined number, depending on when they submit their own assignment and the total number of submissions available for review. See matching guidelines for details.

Note: Some Learners may end up doing more submissions reviews than the predetermined number depending on when each Learner submits their own assignment and the total number of submissions available for review. See matching guidelines for details.

Anonymity

  • both feedback provider and receiver are kept anonymous if the setting is enabled

Visibility

  • temporarily disable this activity for Learners, so it does not appear in the program

How matching works in peer review

Key Matching Guideline:

Peer review matching aims to balance the number of submission review requests and received feedback among all Learners, striving to align it as closely as possible with the pre-set Number of reviews defined in the activity settings.

The actual number of received feedback and submission reviews may differ across Learners and from the set Number of reviews due to the following matching arrangement:

  • a Learner can do the review of other Learners' submissions only completing their own assignment

  • a Learner providing the review will be matched with another Learner who meets the following criteria:

    a) has the fewest number of feedbacks
    b) has completed their own assignment submission earliest among those with an equal number of feedbacks.

  • a Learner who submits their assignment later than others might not receive any feedback if all other learners have already completed their rounds of peer review.

How to ensure that the number of reviews and feedbacks aligns with the set Number of reviews?

Note: The actual number of completed reviews and received feedbacks may differ from the set Number of reviews. The following guidelines explain how to align the number of reviews and feedback as closely as possible with the set Number of reviews.

To balance the number of reviews and feedbacks among all Learners and bring this number as close as possible to the pre-determined Number of reviews, ensure that:

  • the connected assignment has a set deadline. Learn how to set the deadline here

  • the peer review for this assignment has Opening date setting enabled

  • the Opening date for peer review is scheduled for a later date than the assignment deadline.

Example:

  • The assignment is planned to become accessible to learners on November 1, 2023, at 1:00 pm (Opening date in assignment settings).

  • The assignment deadline is scheduled for 8 days following the opening date, providing learners with a submission window until 1:00 pm on November 9, 2023.

  • The peer review for this assignment is set to commence one day after the submission deadline, beginning on November 10, 2023, at 1:00 pm (Opening date in peer review settings).

Recommendation:
Consider incorporating a time gap between the assignment deadline and the opening date of peer review to ensure that Learners with late submissions have the opportunity to receive feedback.
